Taekwondo originated in Korea 2000 years ago and holds many similarities to Japanese Karate, although employs more kicking. However, Taekwondo incorporates many hand and general body techniques.
The Taekwondo student’s uniform is called the dobok and is patterned after the karate student’s uniform, the gi. The dobok is a long-sleeved white uniform made of cotton and polyester and tightened around the waist with a drawstring. The dobok has roomy sleeves and pant legs to allow easy and quick movement. It is important for the uniform to allow complete and unrestricted movement. Each Taekwondo training school will have its own logo or crest which is often embroidered onto the breast of the dobok. The crest can also be in the form of a patch that can be stitched to the breast of your uniform.
The belt worn with a dobok serves as a rank indicator and changes color as the student advances. Belt colors begin with white and continue with orange, blue, and green, and on to purple, brown, and black. A black belt signifies a master. A young black belt may wear a smaller, slightly different dobok called the poom do bok.
sometimes in competition a head guard will be used. Head guards are cast in polyurethane and come in a good variety of sizes. A head guard is designed for full protection with a chin guard aspect, or only top, side and rear protection. Loop fasteners and hooks keep the head guards on. When it came to the competition ring Velcro was often unable to come up to the mark.
Taekwondo - as with Muay Thai - often use shin guards in training. Shin guards are made of plastic and foam, and are used not in competition but in training.
Body armour - or torso/chest protector - is an important element of taekwondo. The protector is a molded plastic sleeveless construct that promotes full range of motion for both arms. The guard is held in place with loop fasteners and hooks.
Taekwondo continues to enjoy worldwide popularity with many thousands of schools to enroll in. Many people use Taekwondo as their main source of exercise.
